P0410 still failing after replacing pump and valve. S70

I have to say the replacement pump and valve were marked "made in China", so I'm not entirely sure I put good parts on. But, the pump noise happens normally as far as I can tell.

Cleared the CEL fault. At first, I was able to go a couple of days before CEL light. Now, it's pretty much next day and the code returns.

The pump was installed before I could replace the valve (had to order the gasket separately). my real-time ODB2 reader shows a status of "UPS" on SAS then OFF.

Replaced the primary O2 sensor a couple of years ago. But, my second O2 sensor has been flatlined for years.

How do I diagnose this?

Turns out a couple of years ago, while replacing all the cracked vacuum line elbows, I installed a new black/white check valve on the SAS vacuum line.

Apparently, my brain doesn't compute the direction arrow when there's a vacuum. Installed the new one...backwards. Fortunately, that diagnostics came free with the timing belt replacement.

When I come up with something no one on this board has seen before, it's always something I've inflicted on myself. Not a Volvo issue.

In between the back of the power steering pump and the intake manifold you have a fitting that fails often. Take a flash light and aim it just below the thermostat housing.

I know that you are in California and the 'testing' is tough, but you could turn off the SAS completely. A simple diode added to the ECM and unplugging the SAS pump: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/140772-sas-air-pump-deletewrite-up-with-pics/

I did my car by pulling off the cover of the ECM, much easier than splicing/dicing the wire bundle.

I have since removed the SAS pump, plugged the valve at the exhaust and have a much cleaner engine bay. Car seems to run better also.

If you plan to keep the pump, you will need to check all of the small vacuum lines, from the pump to the radiator and then to the manifold and rear valve. If you have pump noise after the 2 minute warm up, the relay could be at fault.

Rear O2 sensors don't fluctuate much, if at all. They can get dirty and die with age. Mine needs to be replaced, but at $130 I will just delete the code and wait another month.

As others mentioned, the diode is the way to go. That was my first mod to the car after I bought it and the CEL has been quiet ever since! I live in FL and we don't have emissions here but I've heard that you can still pass even if their reader can't read the system. Somehow Volvos were giving them all sorts of problems and they just keep going looking for codes instead.

      Klaus,

If you decide to revisit the O2 sensor for a bit less money, I bought a Bosch 15035 rear sensor for my 99 V70 on ebay for $88.95 including shipping. It came from a seller named kleen1dog, who sells a lot of stuff. That was a direct plug & play sensor, not the universal.

As Klaus said, the diode thing really WORKS! I just soldered in a diode (on BOTH my current and 'spare' ECUs), and the P0410 error code was GONE. No more CEL.

P.S.: I did not 'unplug' the SAS pump.
