850/v70 roof rack crossbars - need replacement nut/screw 850 1996

Hello to all. I was able to procure a set of factory cross bars from the local pick n pull. In the process I have stripped the security torx head bolts that affix them to the car.

Although I still need to remove the stripped bolt/screw, I will need a source for new bolts. Does nayone have a source or know the part number?

Thanks in advance.

850/v70 roof rack crossbars - need replacement nut/screw 850 1996

Hi Will,

I got a set of racks and the original hardware was toast, and not available
any more from Volvo or Thule the manufacturer.

The broken adjusters came free of the threaded part in the rack OK.

Then I found the right size hex bolt to thread into that part
It's metric, 2-3/8 long 8MM X 125 thd
I used a common flat washer
Then the key to making it work was to get a section of 3/8 steel pipe
The OD of the pipe is about 21/32"
You can get a short length at Home Depot- a 3/8 steel pipe nipple.
Cut to 3/4" long with a 5/16" +- hole for the hex bolt straight through.
You need four of everything.

I drilled the holes first on a drill press holding the pipe nipple
in a vee-block with a clamp then cut to length after. I used a Husky
Pipe cutter, but you can use a sawzall or hacksaw.

It works fine by using a socket wrench instead of those flimsy dohickeys
that were falling apart and/or busted when I got the rack.

If you want a photo give me your e-mail and I'll send , I don't know how to post a picture.

Bill

Thanks Bill. My email is wwaterman@dejazzd.com.

I think we may be talking about different crossbars. Mine I believe are "Euro" style. Mine have Volvo stamped all over them - no evidence of Thule anywhere. The were off a XC70 (2000 i think. This one bolt does eveything - that is hold it and place by claming arounjd the top and bottom of the side rail. Not sure where pipe would come into play, but maybe the picture would help.

Please snd your picture along. Thansk very much for your help.

Will
