850/v70 roof rack crossbars - need replacement nut/screw 850 1996

Hi Will,

I got a set of racks and the original hardware was toast, and not available
any more from Volvo or Thule the manufacturer.

The broken adjusters came free of the threaded part in the rack OK.

Then I found the right size hex bolt to thread into that part
It's metric, 2-3/8 long 8MM X 125 thd
I used a common flat washer
Then the key to making it work was to get a section of 3/8 steel pipe
The OD of the pipe is about 21/32"
You can get a short length at Home Depot- a 3/8 steel pipe nipple.
Cut to 3/4" long with a 5/16" +- hole for the hex bolt straight through.
You need four of everything.

I drilled the holes first on a drill press holding the pipe nipple
in a vee-block with a clamp then cut to length after. I used a Husky
Pipe cutter, but you can use a sawzall or hacksaw.

It works fine by using a socket wrench instead of those flimsy dohickeys
that were falling apart and/or busted when I got the rack.

If you want a photo give me your e-mail and I'll send , I don't know how to post a picture.

Bill
