Camshaft seal replacement S40-V40 2001

I have to change the cam seals in our '01 as they are leaking pretty bad.
Is there a write-up anywhere for the procedure?
I don't have the 1996-1999 Haynes manual which is for a non US model anyway. And I'm not sure that would be relevant as ours is an '01.

My biggest concern is whether or not I have to get a camshaft holder (suspect I do) and how to use it properly, where to place it etc.

If you haven't already pulled things apart you should check for PCV functioning with the engine running. That could be a big reason for the cam seal leakage. If you find the ventilation is clogged you may want to fix it and see if the oil leakage subsides. Chances are though you will still need to R&R the seals.

Good point. I hadn't checked the PCV, never even thought to.
That'll be first on the list.

The front or rear cam seals on your 4 cyl? Rear are fairly easy, the front is a bear because of the VVT:

      Oh, the fronts of course.

Thanks for the link Klaus. I've been searching and having a difficult time finding a good write-up. I like this one, though it does seem a bit daunting. Maybe it's just my age catching up to me. Going to have to read this a few times before attempting - in addition to finding the proper cam holding tool.

Better figure on having two days in case something goes wrong. At least the 854 is up and running so my daughter can use that for the time being.

Still, why does it have to be so complicated? Sigh.

How's your 850? Haven't seen many posts about it recently.

I think I read that article 4-5 times before it became easier mentally. I only question the seal reliability as the 'older' engines without VVT don't seem to have leaky front cam seals.

As for my 850, I love to use the clutch! It has been so cold that maintenance has taken a very long rest and the local pick&pull is out of 850's. I have 2 DTCs, one for the rear O2 sensor and and one for an EVAP leak. I suspect that there is an exhaust leak at the flex joint which would require a manifold replacement (won't do that), and a cracked vacuum line near the right rear wheel.

The exhaust is totally buggered. The join between the CAT and the tail pipe has been welded (???) and the rusting exhaust tip has also been welded to the end of the tail pipe. I would love to shoot the guy that did that.

Other than that, everything works including the AC and the CC!! I just keep the scanner in the car so I can turn off the CEL when it decides to turn on.
