99 V70 Starting V70-XC70

hello all,
Ocasionally and getting more common, When I fill up, the car wont start. After starting fine, for the whole tankfull, filling up seems to cause some kind of problem. Engine will turn but not catch unless i floor it, then it will start, want to stall if i let it idle, after a bit all is well. Any ideas?

A long shot here, but do you top the tank off after the pump clicks off? If so, you may be shoving raw gasoline into the charcoal canister. I don't know what the purge cycle is for the Volvo, but if it tried to purge when you tried to restart the car, a big slug of raw gasoline from the canister may be flooding the engine. Flooding would explain why it responds to floor boarding to start.

I don't usually go beyond the first auto-shut off, but perhaps I will try not filling all the way.

Do the partial fill about 3 times and then try a full tank again. If the charcoal cannister is full of liquid gasoline, it will take a while to empty into the intake manifold and burn.

That is what I would try if it were my problem. I don't know the system well enough to know if there is a malfunction that would load the charcoal canister even if you weren't stuffing the tank.

Post back and let us know what happens when you don't fill it all the way.

        Charley
