Most Reliable Volvo V70-XC70

Sold my '98 XC70, and now driving my '96 850. But, I'm looking to buy another Volvo. XC70 or XC90 is the question. Also, which years are best? I do most of my own maintenance, including timing belt, suspension, brakes, etc. But, I want a car that I can keep going over 200k.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

    I would go with 2005-2007 XC70. We really like our 2007 V70

Thanks. When did the body change? 2007?

The 2001-2007 XC70 and V70 are "P2" platform cars. 2008 XC70 is completely different- "P3". 2007 is the last year the XC70 had the 5 cylinder engine. All of the major bugs seem to have been worked out. I went with the V70 over the XC70 because of better gas mileage, lower maintenance, less expensive to purchase. With a set of dedicated snow wheels, it is very good in the snow. All cars have four wheel brakes and I think that AWD can lull people into a false sense of security in the snow because they rarely have dedicated snow tires.

          So, is a 2007 preferable to a 2008? I know that the 2001 XC70s had a lot of problems.....

Are XC90s less reliable than XC70s?

I'm not a fan of Consumer Reports for the "fun" aspect of cars -- they tend to think of them as appliances rather than "fun" machines, which is how I look at my cars.

However, that magazine is the best objective measure of reliability, given their huge sample sizes, which dwarf any anecdotal comments that you might read on this forum. So solely regarding reliability, that's the source to check.

            Good hunting :-).

              Hi All,

              FYI. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_XC90

"Many owners of the T6 variant reported very early transmission failures, many before 60,000 miles (97,000 km).⎘]⎙]⎚] Some owners reportedly went through two transmissions in that time.⎛] The GM-sourced 4T65EV/GT transmissions usually show symptoms of failure by suddenly slipping while in gear. There was no recall for this issue, but the faults are widely known and documented. Various causes have been given, ranging from engine coolant entering the transmission fluid to problems arising from Volvo's modification of the original GM valve body⎜] unit inside the transmission, but none has been substantiated. Non-GM-sourced transmissions have not suffered unusual failures of this type.[citation needed]

Many owners of early V8 models in 2005 and some in 2006 have reported problems with the counterbalance shaft. A crevice in the engine block where one of the sealed bearings is located collects water if the engine has been in a wet environment such as washing the engine bay. If the engine is not allowed to heat up and evaporate the water out of the crevice, the bearing will fail prematurely. This issue was addressed and fixed by Volvo by drilling a drain hole in the crevice."

01-02 Volvo's with 5 spd auto trans had issues. I had an 01 v70 t5 without problems and thoroughly enjoyed the car. I had an 02 S60 that had trans problems along with other problems. Not good. Own an 05 2.5t 5 cyl xc90. Doing just fine. Purposely avoid t6's as there were trans problems there as well. 04's and newer are the ticket.
