Update: opened the drivers door back up and figured out the problem. There is a small metal rod with a flattened blade end that connects the key cylinder in drivers door handle to a rotary plastic latch in the door lock assembly. It's tricky to get rod inserted into the rotary latch and I missed, the first time. All is well now; central locking system works with both the key in drivers door and from the keyless entry remote.
