In the process of replacing ball joint on drivers side, the axle would not go in enough, so I pulled back the inner boot. The axle with the three big rollers had come out of the box they fit into. It does not look like anything holds the two parts together. Do I just push it back in or get a new half axle?.

If they just slid out I would just slide them back in. I would also reassure myself that there wasn't a groove for circlips that had not been installed by the builder.

To answer your other question - I can't see your axle, but there is probably a clip on the end of the splines that has to compress and pop into a groove in the transaxle.
