Moving at a speed just above 140km/h I suddenly heard a strange sound from the right hand side of the car. It was something between a wissle and a hum. It only appeared when correcting the cars direction slightly to the left (steering slightly to the left for a short time).

At first I thought it might be the wheel nuts starting to get loose, but I stopped to check them and they seemed ok.

Any idea?

That sound is coming from the side-view mirror. My 2000 S-40 had it last summer but it went away. I would hear it when I steered slightly to the left at highway speeds (about 80 mph) or when a momentary crosswind would blow across the highway. Someone suggested placing a slip of velcro tape into the gap where the mirror folds in. I checked it out and there was already some type of thick tape in there to begin with. I left it alone. The noise has stopped now. (possibly because the car is older and dirtier)

one thing that i have found with my '00 v40, if the window is down slightly (less than one inch) it can make all kinds of noise. i'm a smoker and usually have the window cracked while smoking, let me tell ya that it takes a lot of messing with to get the window just right so the whistling doesnt drive ya out the car. on a recent trip to fla. i resorted to using the back window. less effective but much quieter.

More strange noises...

Hello everyone - just like to share some of my experiences with my Volvo 2.0T - been driving it for about 9 months.

1) Wind noise gets quite loud in speeds in excess of 120km/H (windows are up)

2) I find that there is a whistling wind sound that is generated by wind coming through the side mirrors and the car body at certain speeds

3) the dashboard creaks from time to time (just noticed this), when I am turning and especially when I am turning and going over a bump - there is this very annoying "plasticky" creaking sound that is driving me nuts. The sound comes from the driver side (right - in my country)

So there you go, my very own orchestra !
