'03 S40 Radiator Petcock S40-V40

Hello All,

I am changing the thermostat and coolant sensor in my daughters '03 S40. (It is actually an early model '04, I just call it an '03 for simplicities sake.)

I have a little problem. I opened the petcock valve to drain off a bit of the antifreeze, but when I close it, it keeps running; like a trickle. I tried backing out the petcock and reclosing it, but it still keeps running.

I've not had one do this before. I suppose at this point I should just take out the petcock and inspect it, since the antifreeze is all going to run out anyway. I'm guessing a new petcock is in order. At least I am assuming the seal is on the backside of the petcock and not on the radiator itself.

Am I correct in my thinking? If anyone has knowledge in how these seal, I could use any insight you may offer.

Thank you,

Rich

    Hello Again,

I found the problem. After removing the petcock, I now see there is suppose to be an o-ring on the backside of it. The o-ring was jammed halfway into the radiator drain hole. While trying to fish it out with a wire, I proceeded to shove the o-ring the rest of the way into the radiator, where it will now stay for all eternity. I will be picking up a new petcock Monday.

Still, if anyone has any words of "whit". I am appreciative.

My only reservation is what if the O ring were to migrate to the water pump. Not knowing the final routing of the radiator, do you think that a water hose flush from the top could move the O ring to the bottom radiator hose?

        Hi Klaus,

Yeah, the thought of the o-ring possibly moving about did cross my mind. On this model, the upper hose enters the radiator in the upper left-hand corner above the petcock valve. I seriously doubt though there are any openings down the inside edges of the radiator. If there was, removing the upper hose and trying to flush it with a hose would be the only thing I can think of that may move the o-ring towards the lower hose. Otherwise, I do not believe I could generate enough force/current to move the o-ring. With these systems now being closed, I have no idea what kind of current is generated. It’s not like the old days when you could pop the radiator cap and watch the coolant flow.

Possibility removing the lower hose and trying to fish the o-ring out across the bottom? I may give that a shot before closing things up. I cannot think of any other simple solutions.
