I have the original factory radio, AM/FM cassette version of the Volvo radio in my car. Every so often (more and more often!), while listening to the FM band, it stops working - silence only - until I bang on the right side of the console (under the passenger side of the dash). Then it returns! AM works fine, I think, but I don't listen to AM often enough to know. Sure am getting tired of banging on the console, though, and it catches passengers off guard! Is this a loose connection? Any ideas on where I should be looking? Thanks!

My 93 850 had a similar problem with the FM tuner. It went completely dead. AM and CD still worked fine. FM would just scan endlessly for a station. Seems it is not too uncommon to have the FM tuner go bad on the 810 radios. There are places who can repair it, but I just bought a used 850 radio off Ebay for $75. I've heard the repair runs about $100, so you can decide. Here is the contact for a repair, copied from an old post:

Try removing the radio and reseating all the connections. With the age of your car and liklyhood that the radio has never been removed, it may be nothing more then old, dirty oxidated connections. To remove the radio, push in the two tabs that are found on either side of the radio face. These will then pop out and are used as handles to pull the radio out. Don't forget you will need the radio code when installing back. This should take no more then 5 minutes...see if it works.

Funny enought i just bought a used 854 T5 and it has the same problem. Although you have helped me fix the prob now (i hit the dash and the FM radio started working) i would like to know if your removing the radio trick and cleaning the contactors worked or if you found somehting else out? I am planning on removing the radio and cleaning all of the contacts this weekend. That part is easy. Crossing all fingers here!

Its a bad ground in the tuner section, I've worked on lots of these.

It needs to come out and have a technician check all grounds in tuner.
