Considering buying a 2011 S40 T5 with 20K miles S40-V40 2011

I am considering buying a used 2011 Volvo S40 T5 (with 20K miles) for my wife. We have been driving 850s and V70s (wagons) for the last 20+ years, and are ready to transition to a smaller car (we still own an '02 and an '07 V70). Anything to look out for on the S40 ? Any other models to consider? Does Volvo still offer manual transmission in the US?

Thanks,

Bernie

Volvo does offer manual trannies in the US, but most dealers tend to order autoboxes. The S60 R can be found with a 6 speed.

Be warned, the rear seat space is quite small in the 40.

Thanks Klaus! Decided against the S40, and looked at a 2013 S60 T5. I loved it, my wife is hesitant (again, we've been driving Volvo wagons for 20+ years). Her concerns: handling in winter, insurance costs, gas mileage. My concerns: reliability of the turbo.

      'Any thoughts?

It is a front wheel driver, just like the 850 was. Except the S60 has better control in slippery conditions than the 850. The T5 has the single turbo behind the 5 cylinder engine, a very good combination that has been proven to go over 200K without turbo problems.

You don't live in an area with 'steep' hills like New England and Penn, and if you are really concerned, set a couple of $$ aside and look for nice rims on Craigslist that can hold snow tires. Then buy yourself a hydraulic floor jack so you can lift each wheel and remove/install the wheels when needed. Oh, a nice torque wrench for tightening the lug nuts for $25.

Thanks Klaus - hope you had a good 4th of July. We ended up not buying that S60 after all (my wife didn't like the color). We still need to test drive the S40, and see if she thinks it lacks rear seat space. I think the S60 definitely impressed her as somewhat "over the top".

          Regards,

          Bernie

Can I suggest taking your wife on a test drive of a new Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic to be followed by the S40? You need to 'sample' the market. Don't forget to check the ability to merge into highway traffic and find a 'bumpy' road.
