Need Fuel Sending Unit - Part # 9480918 850 1996

Hello All,

I have a 1996 850 GLT wagon with a manual (365,000 miles). I have to replace the Fuel Sending Unit in the tank. Volvo has discontinued this part (Part # 9480918). I’ve called a few Volvo dealers and after market suppliers who specialize in Volvo parts, but no one has it. Can anyone suggest where I can obtain one. Ironically, the gasket (Part # 9447142) is still available. Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

dg,

Thank you for your reply. I found a private company on line that sells NOS Volvo parts at a slight discount. I was just happy to find the part. I called 5 local Volvo dealers and none of them had the sending unit. I’ll save that web site you listed for future reference. As my two beloved 850 wagons hit the 20 year mark, this experience of no longer being able to obtain replacement parts from Volvo will, I am afraid, only become more common.

I think I saw the same unit you referenced on Ebay for $40 plus the gasket. I think it was a used part. I may be wrong. However your reply and the others above helped me.

Hugh

I googled the part number and it looks like a few dealers have a dusty one on the shelf......

Did a quick web search and came up with several sources. Here's one:

Robert,

Thank you! I will save this information. I actually found a company that carries NOS Volvo parts and was able to source a fuel sending unit.

I would check one of the pick & pull yards in CT. In most cases, a simple cleaning will restore the sender. You can check the resistance at the end of the wires with a multimeter to make sure that the unit is working correctly.

My 1995 uses a cannister type sender, also no longer made. The cleaning is on my list as the top 3 gallons are not shown on the gauge. A full tank shows 15 gallons of fuel and the 'empty' light comes on at around 5 gallons remaining.

Besides, $100 for a replacement sensor is nuts!

Klaus,

Thank you for your advice. Your experience is exactly like mine: the needle only registers 3/4 full, when the needle sits on “Empty” the orange “low gas” light doesn’t come on, and when I fill the car it has 4 to 5 gallons more than what is registering.

You will think me a “wimp”. I found a company on line that has NOS Volvo parts and they had exactly 2 fuel sending units left on hand. It how has only one. The price was slightly less than dealer retail.

Hugh
