I have a neighbor with the S60 with about 70K miles who says his transmission is toast, but I find out he has not checked fluid level yet! He says it is not shifting until it warms up.

What is a good transmission fluid to use? Would the S60 benefit to a trans flush like we do on the A70 transmission.

Any advise is appreciated as I am out of my element with the S60.

I have learned the type of oil needed and flush through the radiator is a good thing to do. Once we check and correct fluid level I'll see how it runs.

His is a 5 speed automatic, requires 3309 ATF. Cheapest place to buy could be a Toyota dealer. It's not that cold yet!

Be careful checking the fluid level, the plastic handle is known to break off if bent sideways.

Thanks Klaus for the quick reply, my neighbor just got around to checking fluid level today. Level seemed fine but it looked a little dirty clearly not a nice clean color. The car has 88K miles on it.

AAmco charged him close to $4K about 9 years and 30K miles ago to do something to the trans. H e contacted them and they said they would fix it for him for labor only cost,they supply parts which I ams sure will be high.

He does have hard shifting some of the time that seemed to be while shifting into 3rd or 4th gear. I just drove it around the block and for the most part it shifted fine.

I thought it might benefit from a trans flush and suggested he go to a reputable Indy in Tampa that has been around for 35 or 40 years for an opinion / recommendation.

I don't know what he will do, I'm not sure that Aamco is the best solution. He does have a computer message that says he needs the transmission serviced.

He is thinking about a new car and likely has not maintained this as well as he should at 88K he has not changed a timing belt.

Does the trans sound shot?

Factory says Tbelt at 105K miles or 10 years. In the hot climate, he is pushing it. There is a possible 'fix' for the tranny -

Some have had luck with this, others not so much. Read the description. If it doesn't solve the issue, the tranny will self destruct.

Before you do a flush read the codes. The "service transmission" light can/will also mean there is a fault coded stored in the computer. That will tell you what may be wrong. Flushing rarely helps a bad trans.

Update, my neighbor went to Volvo and they programed the computer and said he was good to go. The trouble light came back on within a few miles. He called Volvo about it and waiting for their reply.
