2005 S40- P0171 S40-V40

Replaced:
Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor
MAF
Fuel Filter

Long term fuel trim holds at 21% on OBII scanner

Disconnected battery 30 minutes-brake pedal- reconnected.

Code goes away then comes right back.

I have 65K miles-

The PCV Oil Trap Housing and hose was not replaced under warranty. Could this be a source of this code?

The dip stick does not pop out, or whistle, The oil cap removed when running at idle will lower rpms at idle a little. no great vacuum pull.

Any help appreciated.

Trip to Dealership?

    Ok-problem solved!
Took it to independent volvo repair shop-ran diagnostic viadas ( volvos) software.
Air leak test identified air leak.
PCV hose beneath plastic valve cover cracked in half.
My car was outside of volvo warranty -in excess of 10 years.
That covered the PCV /oil filter housing and hoses.
This is what is being replaced.
    Reset the ECM.
Also, discovered -radiator overflow tank was cracked. ( replacing myself)

I was going to replace myself but was uncomfortable spraying starting fluid on running engine.
    Cost:$600.00 includes oil change.

Hope this can provide guidance fo P0171 check engine light!

Klaus- hit the nail on the head! Thanks

That was a tough leak to find.

Spraying starting fluid is not as hazardous as it sounds. It requires a spark to ignite. If it should ignite, highly unlikely outside of combustion chamber, it will NOT explode. Of course there are horror stories, but usually from total idiots working on carburated engines while lighting another cigarette!

I found this, look at post #17 near the bottom:

    http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s40-11/p0171-cant-fix-81039/

Most P0171s are the result of vacuum leaks, unmetered air. A bad MAF can also generate it, but at 65K miles?

It is a sorry state when the dipstick pops out under pressure, don't wait for that to happen. But, the PCV system should be checked at around 100K, and it should not be 'clogged' if you use synthetic engine oil.
