STUBBORN Axle Removal 850

So I was switching over to the winter tires on my son's 850 and I notice CV Joint Grease splatter around the wheel well. I purchased a rebuilt axle and transmission seal and proceed to remove and replace the axle. Having done several of these in the past along with numerous wheel bearing replacements, I thought I could knock this off in no time (Yes, I did remove the axle nut-haha). WRONG!!! I cannot get this axle to budge! I have PB Blaster'd the splines, banged on it, I have even rented an axle removal tool from Advance Auto with no success! It is in there for good. I am almost to the point of removing the Steering knuckle along with the driveshaft and replacing both as a last resort. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance for any tips...

Thanks for the line on the tool from Auto Zone B.B. The Tool I had from Advance had the 5 lb. slide hammer also. Didn't even begin to touch it. I ended up taking out the steering knuckle and Half shaft out as a unit an took the assy to my machine shop. He put it on his big press and he said it sure wasn't easy coming out, but he got it. Put everything back together tonight and all is good now. My son now has reliable transportation again. Now I gotta get new front brake pads and rotors again for the January State Inspection that'll be due. It's a never ending process with three Volvos in the fleet......

Soak it in Mystery oil for an hour, Then smack the end of the spline
with a BFH / A sledge if that doesn't do it. With the nut on of course.
If that fails, maybe cut a 2X4 to brace the steering knuckle against the frame
and then smack the end of the spline again.

I'm having trouble getting the inner spline free of the Gear case

and the Advance tool wont cut it.
Go to auto zone and get their slide hammer, And their #27058 adapter.
When the inner end wont budge.

    Bill

I assume you put the nut back on the end of the axle and hit it with a sledge hammer. PBBlaster will take a while to penetrate the rusted splines.

I am not looking forward to doing this on my rusty car!

Tried that first Klaus. Mushroomed the end of the nut pretty well. PB Blaster has been soaking for 24 hours now without success. It's looking like I'll have to take the axle and steering knuckle assy. to my machine shop to have it pressed out unless another option is suggested. 20 tons of pressure should push that "bad boy" out! Erie Vovo is 45 minutes away if the knuckle doesn't survive...

"removing the Steering knuckle along with the driveshaft"

This is what I had to do once. It was so stuck that I had to bring it to a shop that was able to remove it eventually with lots of pounding. Fortunately, nothing was damaged. Though I had resigned myself to having to change whatever got broke.
