Dead cylinder V70-XC70 1999

I agree with Bill. Unlike the old red block 4 cylinder (bulletproof beyond belief!), the Volvo 5 cylinder engines require more care. Synthetic will help the engines last longer and keep the PCV system clean. My 95 855 has 249k and is just beginning to use some oil (quart every 2k or so) but I think that is due to having used dino oil in it.

All along I've used synthetic in my 2002 Passat wagon and it uses almost no oil at 130K.

Good luck! Hopefully your cylinder isn't dead.
