I need advice on selling my wrecked S60T5 S60 2002

Hello All,

Sadly two months after I purchased a pristine 2002 S60 T5 last October from the original owner with just over 130,000 miles, my bride crashed it into a telephone pole. Thankfully she was not hurt, but the car was totaled. Regretfully, I now must sell the car for parts. Besides Craigslist, are there any other on line sales venues people can recommend to list this car on? I hope to find a new home for the engine and transmission (5 speed manual). The car was in beautiful shape and I hope as many parts as possible can find a new life with another owner. I’m not too savvy in terms of selling a parts car on line, so I would appreciate any advice. I reside in CT. Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh

      Klaus,

Thank you so much for bring this car to my attention. I am very hearten by it. The S60 R is a great car, but I am looking for another T5. This R is reasonably priced at $5,100 (in my opinion I hasten to add). It looks like a nice car.

I prefer a T5 because I have been told by my private mechanic, it is a less expensive car to maintain than the R. The R has AWD and other nice features (including 300 HP vs 247 HP for the T5) that the T5 lacks. The T5 appears to be a simpler model than the R, which is fine by me.

Still, like my T5 that I just lost, I’d like another like it. Your showing this S60 R raises my spirits because it shows cars similar to my T5 are out there and are reasonably priced. Klaus, I know you are busy by the many well written and informed posts you place on this website, but you seem to the the “Godfather of Volvos”. If you ever see T5 in your travels, please let me know. As I said in an earlier post, I hope another one “falls” into my life like the last one did.

But again thanks, your e-mail was a real “Pick-me-Up”. I confess, I’m still in morning for my “old” T5.

      Hugh

If you do find another turbo, I think that it is possible to detune them a bit by adjusting the waste gate to reduce boost.

If you slow the car down a bit, you will still have all the other features the car possesses.

      James,

Thank you for your suggestion. I confess, I liked the 300 HP (stock was 247 HP). If I am lucky enough to attract another S60 T5 as pristine as the one I just lost, I would install the hardware to increase the HP. My hope is my wife has “finally gotten religion” in terms of slowing down. Of course, it may be a blessing that I never acquire a T5 again. Sometimes the things we want are not in our best interests. It was my hope that I would have owned that car “as is” for 20 years. I would have taken good care of it, and would have appreciated it, but more importantly I would have respected it for its abilities and would driven accordingly.

Al above said “cars find us” that we want. I hope that is true.

      Hugh

I am glad your wife is OK. Condolences on your S60. May the car rest in pieces.

I am sure that much of your car is still worth something. But all I know is Craigslist and that will bring a lot of jerks to your door step looking to get free stuff.

Look around for another S60 and use the old one for parts? Junk yards will usually pay $3-400 for the whole car.

      Klaus,

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I am very thankful my wife was not hurt. The crash proved why we drive Volvos.

You have done me a favor by telling me how much my car may be worth:$300 to $400. I had no idea. With regard to looking around for another S60, I don’t have the time, skill or resources to do so. The T5 is presently siting in the lot of the garage where I get all my Volvos serviced. They are not charging me storage fees, which I am thankful for. However, I can’t “wear out my welcome” and must get that car out of their lot as soon as possible. I appreciate their help, and don’t want to abuse it.

I just listed the car on Craigslist, so I guess the “crazies” will start contacting me. I’m also trying to get it listed on “Bargainnews.com” a local on line paper.

As I said above, I hope another T5 falls into my life. I was told by an iPd representative that Volvo made the T5 with a stick up to 2007, so maybe there is another one out there somewhere. Now that my wife has learned to slow down, if I do find another T5 maybe it will last longer.

Again thank you for your comments.

      Hugh

I forgot that yours had a clutch. The tranny and other clutch parts might be worth a bit over $800 by itself for someone wanting to convert an autobox.

Suggestion: Next S60 without a turbo. It might slow down the driver. People in CT generally drive to fast for road conditions, I know because I used to live there. There is no starting location in the state to let someone drive for two hours and not be in another state, what's the rush?

I don't know about selling parts, but my son had a front end collision. The insurance company said the repair exceeded the value of the car (at that time about $4800). I bought the car from the insurance company for $600, paid $2300 for a front clip at an auto recycler & $2100 to have the used parts installed & now have my own nice looking 2001 S60 T5. If you like the car you may consider repair. The recycler I used was located in Omaha, NE. The body shop was one I've used locally for years on my Volvos (children liked to hit deer).

      Marlin,

I wish I lived in Omaha, NE instead of Fairfield, CT. An auto body shop I have used for several years in doing major repairs on my other Volvos (my wife and middle daughter have both seriously crashed our fleet of Volvos-forutnately never hurt - they could star in “Volvo Saved My Life Commercials”) quoted me a fee of $5,000 in labor to repair the car. My private auto repair shop had a donor base model “S60” available for all the parts I would require for $4,000. There was no insurance, so to put my T5 back together would cost $9,000 out-of-pocket which I could not justify or afford. My wife has a lead foot. If it took the sacrifice of my beautiful T5 to bring that lesson home, without her being injured, it was worth it. This car fell into my life, I hope another one does too. I wanted to keep and maintain this car for the rest of my life. Did I reed it? No. Did I want it? YES! However, it being a 4 door sedan with 5 passenger capacity made me feel I wasn’t being a total spendthrift. I could transport my entire family around in this car.

Marlin, I really liked the how your story ended with your T5. Take good care of it and enjoy it for many years.

      Hugh

"I hope another one does too."

I have said for years that old Volvos find me.
I can't think of any time that I spent time searching for one. Ok wait. Maybe I did for the '86 745T, but that was 28 years ago.

I concur that it's a relief that your wife is ok. But I've got to say, after reading that "my wife and middle daughter have both seriously crashed our fleet of Volvos" and "My wife has a lead foot", maybe she needs to tone it down some. Believe me, I know how people drive in southwestern CT...I work for CT DOT and am on the side of the road daily. You wouldn't believe the reckless and inattentive driving that I witness daily. Just waiting for the day I get run over. One in my crew almost did.

Good luck finding another or having one drop into your lap.

          Al,

Thank you for your good wishes. My wife does have a lead food. Although I deeply regret the loss of the T5, I hope she finally “gets it” and slows down. If she does, the loss of the T5 and avoidance of serious injury for herself and others was worth it. Sometimes people can’t learn any other way. My daughter’s accident was due to youthful inexperience and was a not due to excessive speed.

I hope you are right that another T5 falls into my life. There’s an expression: “What you want, wants you.”

          Hugh
