I think my 2005 Volvo V70 AWD 2.5 has Lucas electrics......

Hello,

I have a just over 230,000 on this vehicle and here is the problem.

The last couple of weeks, I can drive it for 3 to 4 hours without a problem. Then when I shut it off and go to restart it 5 or 10 minutes later, the "Service Transmission" light comes on. If I let it cool down and rest for 20 to 30 minutes it starts up fine and runs great.

The next couple of runs almost the same thing, however, two warnings came on,
"Service transmission" and "Service Engine". Then the warning lights disappeared and everything back to normal.

Then last week the warning messages came back on, including brake failure, tach stopped working, temp gauge stopped working. Let it sit for a bit and everything is fine .

Took it into to get the codes checked and "communication error, unable to read codes". Now for the last three days the car has been running like a well tuned race car, no problems, starts right up goes and goes..

Anyone have any hints???

I owned a Triumph Spitfire, so I am kinda of use to it, but the wife, not so much....

Thanks

Intermittent/random faults that are here today and gone tomorrow and that seem to be heat related, including "communication error, unable to read codes", spell "bad connection somewhere" to me. The challenge is finding a component that is common to all those errors. As Klaus mentions, the CEM might just be that part. However, before spending the bux to have it tested/overhauled, I would pull the TCM and ECM out of their connectors, clean the pins, and reseat them. It's a five minute job but takes a special tool to unlatch and relatch them properly. The Haynes manual shows how to fabricate one yourself or you can take it to a good Volvo independent mechanic, or of course the d-d-d-dealer.

I know I harp on those CEM and TCM connectors, but I lived through an expensive troubleshooting experience just to find that to be the problem on our 2005 S80.

Not Lucas, but Volvo electronics. The two most probable culprits are the DIM and the CCM. Neither are a 'cheap' fix, but check with a Canadian outfit called xemodex.com They do great work. Call them before doing anything rash.

I had thought that the DIM was better in 2005, a disaster in 2001 &2. Seems that the heat sink in both modules isn't large enough and the solder joins get over heated and fail.
