I think my 2005 Volvo V70 AWD 2.5 has Lucas electrics......

Not Lucas, but Volvo electronics. The two most probable culprits are the DIM and the CCM. Neither are a 'cheap' fix, but check with a Canadian outfit called xemodex.com They do great work. Call them before doing anything rash.

I had thought that the DIM was better in 2005, a disaster in 2001 &2. Seems that the heat sink in both modules isn't large enough and the solder joins get over heated and fail.
