Won't engage into drive easily after engine mount replacements... S70 1998

All,

I just performed a lot of work on my wife's 1998 S70 at 145k miles.

Here is the list:
- Rear Shocks,
- Front Struts (everything replaced),
- Front control arms,
- Front and Rear engine mounts,
- Right side engine mount,
- Front Rotors and Pads.

So during the rear engine mount replacement I had jack the transmission up very high and still couldn't get the old mount out and therefore had to remove the bracket that mounts to the transmission.

Upon starting up today I noticed that it seemed to shift hard from N to D. When I stepped on the gas, nothing but engine revving. I found that if I slammed, and that is a harsh statement, the shifter from N to D that it would engage and work just fine.

So my question is what have I possibly done to make the transmission and/or transmission cable not engage properly and is there possibly an adjustment that I can make to the cable to regain smooth operation.

Thanks in advance

Matt

I am not sure what you mean by 'slamming' the tranny. If you can feel it going into drive and the car doesn't move - that may be an axle pulled away from the tranny. Of course, if after 'slamming', the car goes into gear and is driveable, then another issue may be to blame.

Well, what I mean by Slamming is if you go back into N and then back into D without going into 3 and pull it a little harder it will engage.

So tonight I did the following:
1. Placed the car in N and was able to start the car,
2. with the car off, but the key in the run position, I was able to see the reverse lights light in both directions.

Then I started the car and here is where I currently am.

While placing the car in D, if I go slightly past D and into 3, without lighting up the up arrow, and then back into D the car works fine, so I'm thinking I've moved the PNP switch a tad.

I will have to take a look at it this weekend, but for now the car is drive able.

I'll post back here once I'm able to look at it.

Thanks for all the help thus far.

Regards,

Matt

That makes more sense, thank you. It is also possible that you 'stretched' the cable when you jacked up the engine too much. You might want to take the center console out and check the other end also.

KlausC,

What will taking the center console out tell me once I'm in there? Are there adjustments there as well?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Not knowing how high you jacked the engine up, you may have stressed/moved the shift cable to the PNP just a tiny bit. I know it is a pain to get access, but check the alignment anyway. (Do the backup lights come on when in R?)

Klausc,

The back up lights work when in reverse.

The PNP, that's located underneath the center console correct?

Matt

Normally, if the PNP is out of spec, the back up lights will not work.

The PNP is on top of the tranny, under the air filter box and battery tray.

No, it's in the engine compartment, under the air box/battery area, Here is a video that will show you the way:
