ETM Replacement V70-XC70 2000

After 175K miles my ETM is just starting to give me problems. I'm going to pull it out these weekend. Wondering what the best option is these days for repairing/rebuilding/replacing it?

Also, while I'm in the area, the positive battery cables could use replacing. Are there any thicker pre-made cables out there or should I just go with a new factory cable again?

Is this also a good time to service the PVC breather? I tried the glove test on the oil cap and there seems to be good vacuum in the crankcase. What does one do to clean it out if it is easy to get to at this time.

With age, the black wire shields on the harness around the front and side of the engine have all become brittle or even broken off in some cases. Is there an OE quality or improved quality replacement wire shield I should use on the bare wires while I am at it.

The V70 is still running great so I don't mind putting in some extra effort to keep it up an running for a good while longer.

Thanks

Are the teeth broken off the gears inside the ETM or are the contacts just dirty ? Or is it failing electronically ? Contacts are easy to clean. Broken gears need replacement. Electronic failure means complete replacement.

I'm getting the ETM light on and some idle problems. Unit seems pretty dirty when I got it apart and wire insulation looks cooked in a few places so I am thinking to sending it out for rebuilding. There used to be a guy in LA that did this. Are there any recommendation for a rebuilding service?

He bought a kit from Ebay, around $150, in 2013.

Cable replacement: OE should work just fine, it is usually just the inch before the battery clamp that is required. That is where most of the corrosion takes place.

There is never a good time to do the PCV! Matthews Volvo site has some good mods rather than stock replacement piping. Search for it.

I had some left over 12mm silicone vacuum lines, I split them down the middle and they made excellent covers for the wiring looms. A little black tape water proofed them.

I got the ETM and the starter out tonight (the starter needed rebuilding also).

I can also see the PCV breather box and wonder if I should replace it while I 'min there. The it replaced at this point without removing the intake?

Is there an upgraded breather box out there or is OEM still the way to go for the breather box?

Thanks

There is no update for the breather box. If you are looking for busy work, remove the box and check the 2 ports through the block.

The tube from the breather box to the air intake just before the turbo should be replaced, and the PTC nipple cleaned.

I plan to replace the wire from the starter to the battery positive post at this time. There also seems to be a cable from the starter to the alternator. Wondering if those cables ever need replacement like the battery cables do?

Those are low voltage wires, but the starter terminals should be cleaned. You might want to coat the terminals in di-electric grease after the starter is re-installed.
