P0014/P0015/P303 codes help. (v40, 2000) S40-V40

I am having consistent ODBII codes thrown as follows:

P0014
P0015
P0303

Can anybody offer advice on how these codes could be interconnected, and the best or strongest option as the component or system to check?

Can a misfire piston #3 "cause" the other two position codes?

Thanks for opinions out there. In my previous post I had a P0128 code thrown, but I have replaced the thermostat and filled up the coolant level (may have been low), and now that code seems to have cleared up. I still would like to figure these remaning ones out and get it fixed though.

Thanks

Check the coil for the P0303, just swap it with #2 and see if the code changes to P0302.

The p0014 and 15 are for the VVT solenoids. Check the wiring for them first. Are you using synthetic engine oil? You may need to remove them and clean them out with kerosene.

Or, you could get online and do a search on the Pnnnn codes.

Can you (or anybody) explain to me what and where the "VVT solenoids" are located?

My P0303 code had gone away, but I still have the P0014/15 are still cropping up....

      Thanks!

Oh and also... according to this site, those OBDII codes seem to refer to the camshaft position, not VVT solenoids?:

        P0014 "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

        P0015 "B" Camshaft Position -Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

        (OBD-Codes.com)

Could it also be that the timing gear has lost a tooth perhaps? I think I've heard that this is a design-weakness of this model engine, as the timing gear is a fiberous material, prone to break down? It's also an expensive fix...

        Thanks out there!

What kind of oil do you use and when was the last oil change? Miles on the engine?

          Timing belt changed?

The solenoids are on top of the engine by the timing belt. If they get clogged with dirty oil and low oil pressure, they won't work and you will get P0014 & P0015. It is required to use only full synthetic 10W30. You might want to try some Marvel Mystery Oil with an oil change, it will help clean any sludge.

Thanks for the tips... think I'll try swapping coils to see what happens there.

Right now it starts with very rough, "juddery" feel... then once I've warmed it up and driven some, that goes away and it smooths out. I guess this could be from #3 missing firing... but why would it change as the engine warmed up?

Also.. synthetic oils tend to gum up spark-plugs, is that what you were saying?

      Thanks for your input Klaus.

Unburned gasoline gums up spark plugs, not engine oil. And oil has no pathway to the spark plugs, unless your rings are totally shot - and Volvo makes very good blocks and rings.

Remember, gasoline is an oil derivative and if you cook gasoline long enough it will leave a deposit that looks like caked oil. Also, if there was liquid oil at the bottom of the spark plug hole, it will coat the threads of the spark plug while you are removing the plug.

Have you tried clearing all of the codes and seeing which ones come back immediately?
