Potential transmission leak... V70-XC70 2007

All,

I have an oil leak between the transfer and where it attaches to the transmission.

I thought I had fixed this, but apparently not.

So before I take it in to be repaired, because I'm not doing this job again, I was wondering if there is a dye I might be able to safely add to my transmission oil so that I can make sure that this is indeed transmission fluid and not my transfer case leaking.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

UPDATE: Potential transmission leak... V70-XC70 2007

All,

So I finally got under the car today and removed the belly pan.

The good news is that I don't have a transmission leak.

The bad news is that I have a transfer case leak at the pinion seal, so the transfer case has to come out to be fixed.

Believe the issue is that I put the wrong seal in the transfer case.

I say this because I pulled the angle gear out of an '06 S60 AWD car, and my car is a '07 XC70 AWD. Although Volvo states the seal I purchased for the replacement will fit 03-07, it is not the same part that I pulled out of the transfer case, therefore I ordered the wrong part and now need to order the correct part and reinstall.

UGH! I really do hate pulling that damn thing out. This will make the third time that I've had to do it.

Matt

Still, beats the heck out of pulling the tranny. You need to ask Santa for a lift!

Engine oil and tranny fluid have very different odors. The latter has a sweet pungent odor. The nose knows.

I wouldn't add dye to the transmission, which has about 9 quarts of fluid and would require a lot of dye. Even the UV yellow stuff would be diluted too much.

Adding a little UV dye to the transfer case makes more sense. Auto parts stores sell the dye. The dye will not harm the transfer gears.

Klausc,

That is a great idea!

Wish I had thought about that!

I'm going to pick some up today and add it in this weekend.

Thanks again,

Matt
