Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

Sort of implied.

Brickboard member JD620 is asking what rust-free Volvo models to buy 10K$ and less on the RWD forum. Current a RWD Volvo owner only.

Could you AWD/FWD folks provide reply for JD620? Link:

https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1669874/940/960/980/V90/S90/replacement_cars_240s_740s_940s.html

Also, a factory stock manual 1997 normally aspirated 850 is featured in this Regular Car Reviews video. All the reason I'd want a FWD Volvo. Maybe the host is so sarcastic it is facetious sardonic commentary that to me appears to advocate the featured 1997 850 with M56 manual transmission.

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

95-97 850’s and 98 S/V 70’s are the years to buy if you are looking for simplicity and minimal electronics. Also galvanized bodies and stainless steel exhaust. Car is far more rust resistant than the 240’s.

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

Never have I experienced the quality equal to that of my 1996 850 wagon, which I sold some years ago. Since then, I have owned three other wagons ('07 V70, '02 V70 Turbo, and '02 V70), and none compares to that of the'96 850!

      Now ... I am driving a 2019 Honda Accord.

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

      Hiya Mr. Walker!!!!

      Happy Sat-Your-Day!!!!

I have very little driving time in FWD/AWD Volvo.

Yet I like the years you mention.

I found the regular car reviews YouTube page and posted the video link. Yet I agree with Klaus the review is poor, yet while the reviewer disdains the white 1997 850 Sedan with M56(!), is the reason why more so I want such a vintage 850. No Turbo. The normally aspirated engine is powerful enough ply the rotten roads of Murika at the posted speed limits as with 240.

Though in though in the video it implied to me similarity with driving some early 70-80s VWs like the Sirocco. Inside rear wheel lifts up in spirited driving. Unnerving in 1988 for me.

I'll ask member JD620 to ask here on the AWD/FWD forum.

      Happy Eggnog Hallow-Days!!!!!

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

        How do Kitty!!

I believe that review was purposely cynical. It is hard to tell, but his motive for making fun of the 850 may be selfish. He may be trying to dis the car to dissuade people from buying 850’s. Among the hipsters the 240 has now become a cult car. Maybe the same trend with the 850? I’ve heard people say the 850 is the new 240. Like the 240 it has a rep for lasting a long time.

Also, don’t overlook the 98 S70 and V70. It is essentially an 850 with an updated body and interior. Popular with the AWD folks. Maybe it is the real sleeper??

        Happy trails,
        Jim

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

          Hiya Mr. Walker!

          Happy Thursday (all day long)!

          Thank you.

The Regular Car Reviews host guy is maybe writing comedy or comedic car reviews? Yet in some of his reviews for other makes and models, he is rather well studied so far as I know about the model history and *usually* relates the driving experience quality well.

On the Regular Car Reviews YouTube page are two reviews of Volvo 240. One is rather full of colorful if blue comments. The other relate the experience of driving a 240 in a plausible condition. I linked the colorful Volvo 240 review and Phil Machine Man was rightly unimpressed. I find the review funny if uninformative yet relates the history from hipsters to enthusiasts. The vacuum lines in a 1990+ 240 are not as complicated as the human circulatory system! The PVC piping can be a bother!

There is a service and sales shop here in arches and NHL blues town saying the early S40 is the new 240. Sort of doubt it a bit. Non Turbo early 2000s with manual transmission. It was alright.

Though agree with you that 850 mostly and early S70 / V70 that are FWD and manual transmission are a good bet. How the Regular Car Reviews guy mentions the engine torque, less so horsepower, and the wide power band is what I recall. I'd encountered that with 60s/70s US V8 cars. Yet I rarely if ever floor it beyond merging into a highway.

Yet may be too late in 2019? The reviews guys mentions the terrible 'cash for klunkers' off'd many cars.

I'd consider 850 ownership with a place for proper care for stage zero tune as the goal. Need a garage. The three 240s need a lot of work and without a garage ...

Hopefully jd620 gets useful help here. If jd620 can perform the mechanical restoration work on 850 - S/V 70, maybe a worthy goal.

Though a poster in jd620's post / thread mentions a BMW E46. I fancy older BMW models that are more self serviceable than the newer models. Yet may go to FWD Volvo.

The AWD systems read as problematic. Maybe the AWD systems are neglected? I was told about the angle gear from the transmission to the AWD systems 'transfer case'? Maybe we could use a AWD/FWD FAQ?

          https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/angle-gear-leak-fix.html

Like Turbo, I can probably do without AWD. That 2003 FWD white S60 non-Turbo with M56 (?) at West County Volvo in 2004-2005 was alright. I went there to visit a well-rusted 1990s 240. Rusted on the passenger side.

Sorry to go on so long again. Need a job. Work to get the compulsive QWERTY time done.

          Thank you Mr. Walker!

          Happy Holiday Seasonings!

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

It's the early AWD cars that have issues with their drive system. 2004+ AWD should be fine.

FYI- The 1999+ cars have more complicated electronics than the early cars. Electronic throttle, tranny software, DIM issues etc.

I totally agree with you regarding older BMW's! I prefer the way RWD handles over FWD or AWD. In addition to owning 3 Volvos, I owned quite a few older RWD BMW's - a 1600, 3-2002's and a 3 series... The drawback to BMW's is the cost of maintenance is even higher than Volvo! Although I have heard the early 2000's 3 series are good cars.

Let us know if you need more help with selecting a FWD Volvo. Here in the AWD/FWD forum we are always glad to help.

Enjoy the holiday liquid samplings...:) and the season!!

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

That Regular car review was a total waste of time, much less a pile of manure. His 'facts' were wrong. The car was 21 years old. He didn't know how to drive!

Question about FWD/AWD models on RWD forum

Agreed. Yet for all the reasons he decants his disdainful social commentary about that 1997 850 with M56 and no Turbo is why I want one more so.

Maybe the regular car reviews guy is making comedy more so than reviewing the so called regular cars? I dunno. I enjoy his reviews.

I helped an owner with t-belt and water pump replacement. A tight squeeze for my fat hands, yet we got it. Not so bad. Also replaced a motor mount or to. It was an auto 85-86 850.

Yet want a garage first. Had a chance for a white 2001-2002 FWD S60 with 5-speed gearbox and low miles in Saint Louis for cheap in 2004 or so. Sort of regretting it now. Base model S60. Grey cloth seats and carpet and dark grey console and dash. A short test drive in heavy traffic on Manchester Road in west Saint Louis county and I did not realize what S60 was about. I liked the gear box. Far less testy then M47 II in 240. Of the three 240s two M47 have been abused. The 1991 240 M47 II is quite okay. Yet I drive gently, usually. Rotten roads here.

Thank you Klaus. Happy Holiday Seasonings!!!!!
