Clunk while driving in reverse with steering at full lock V70-XC70 1998

My car is a '98 V70 AWD. The AWD system is still functional.

After sitting most of the winter the car has developed a new noise. When I back out of my driveway and turn the steering all the way to full lock I hear a thunk/clunk that continues as long as the car keeps moving. It seems worse if the steering wheel is cranked all the way to the right.

The noise does not occur when the car is stationary or moving forward at full lock. It just occurs when I'm moving in reverse at full lock. My impression is the sound is moving more from the right side of the car.

I had the front passenger side wheel off but didn't find anything clearly loose. The boots on the CV are intact and there are no signs of grease being slung.

The car had the rear calipers replaced before going to sleep for the winter. In the prior year all four tires were replaced. In the last 3-4 years the front strut assemblies were replaced the Sachs units, rear Boge shocks were replaced, all the sway bar end links were replaced. It had an alignment at the dealer and still holds it.

I greased the steering stops with generic grease but it made no difference.

I did figured out today that the shop that replaced both calipers over torqued the lug nuts. I can't really find anything else that's off.

The car drives fine. There's no strange noises when driving over the terrible IL roads. No clunks or creaking noises. I have no clue what's up with it. Any ideas? Thanks.

The problem is the bracket that the carrier bearing for the driveshaft attaches to is crumbling from rust. This is the same bracket that functions as an exhaust hangar. That's allowing the driveshaft to flop around. A new bracket is on order.

Follow up thought. Mounts, specifically the front motor mount which is located near the passenger side front wheel on the 5 cylinder engines. That one does wear out at high mileage. Had to replace it on my 850 at 200k+ miles. It is strange, however, that the clunking would show up out of the blue without any other symptoms.

Also check the upper torque mount. If it is shot perhaps it is allowing the engine to shift when you go full lock with the steering?

Both of those have been replaced within the last couple of years. This is one of 4 cars so I haven't put a ton of miles on it. I used it for a 10-15 minute commute prior to covid.

It has an OEM upper torque mount. Not poly.

It has 191,xxx or so miles on it now. A ton of stuff has already been replaced to get it that far.

After looking through posts that are more than ten years old, I am wondering if it's a failed torque tube bushing in the rear drivetrain area. The symptoms described in those old posts seem to match what I'm experiencing.

I'd be applying a pry bar to the lower suspension arm bushes. It would be interesting to know when the noise starts when related to the degrees of lock. Is it there at half lock for example. Can you have someone outside the car listen to pinpoint where the noise is coming from?

I had one wheel off and couldn't find anything loose. The sound only occurs when the car is rolling in reverse. If I just crank the wheel lock to lock all I get is normal P80 PS sounds.

    Two thoughts:

    1. Tie rods - passenger inner tie rod specifically, but to be safe check them all if you haven’t recently.

    2. Have you ever lubricated the universal joints in the steering shaft? With age, they can get noisy and eventually seize up. The lower one is the likely culprit as it is exposed to all sorts of road grime. I used WD-40 to clean/lubricate the u-joints on my 850 and 240 but penetrating oil has been recommended too. Rotate the steering lock to lock for a few minutes while applying to maximize penetration.
