stuck driver's seat belt V70-XC70

was driving the v70 ⏮] the other day and when i wnet to extend the seatbelt to latch it, it hung about half way out. I could not retract it or extend it either way. I disassembled the B pillar cover and removed the belt. while removing it, it retracted itself but it would not extend no matter what. I orderdered a replacment and am awaiting its arrival but that was really wierd. also the load had not fired so it was not related to that.

Same symptoms happened on our 2000 V70. Was told that the belt could be carefully rewound successfully, but that didn't work for me. A new driver's side seat belt and retractor (with "hazardous material" explosive charge) was ordered and installed.

I recall the warnings to follow the instruction sequence exactly; e.g., disconnect the battery before any disassembly. If instructions not followed, the supplemental restraint system (airbag) SRS warning light will trigger and can only be reset by the Volvo dealer.

Just want to add further emphasis. Be sure to always disconnect the battery at least 1/2 hour before working on ANY part of the SRS system. In particular, if working on the airbag it can go off and ruin your day!

        Thanks guys.

I removed the offending seat belt reel. I oredered a good used one. Battery disconnected, of course.
Anyhow partially disassembled the old one and found that the gravity switch and matching slot had disentigrated with age [plastic parts]--if i manually released the "gravity" arm in the slot, i could extend the belt.

New reel was like $400. [probably 1/2 the value of the car]. used reel $85...functions properly.

        v70 back on the road.

        Thanks
