Steering Rack Fluid - Will Any ATF Do? S40-V40

Hello again, I asked the group a while back about a leak in my steering rack when I was looking for alternatives to replacing the rack. I had used some Barr's additives for stopping steering rack leaks, and they worked for a time. Sort of.

I eventually broke down and had the rack replaced and things are wonderful now, but I need to top up the Power Steering fluid reservoir.

Question: Owner's Manual says to use ATF in the Power Steering reservoir, will any ATF be okay? How about a Valvoline product that is marketed as "Transmission Stop Leak"? Do you know if that would be suitable? It is an ATF but with other properties.

I need to top up the reservoir but don't want to put something in there that is not appropriate.

Feedback? Ideas? Caveats? Witticisms?

Thanks, Doug

Steering Rack Fluid - Will Any ATF Do? S40-V40

Thank you very much for the reply, I decided against the ATF with the leak stop ingredient because I couldn't figure out what it was. The Owner's manual specified any quality Dexron ATF so I topped it up with Valvoline Dex III/Merc and so far it has worked great. Thank you very much again!!! Doug

I logged in, but it did not take.

Who replaced the rack? what fluid did they fill it up with?

I would ask them to top it off with the same fluid.

Perhaps they did not properly purge the air out of the system, hence the low fluid.

When I replaced the rack on our '90 744TI I parked the front wheels on a stack of cardboard (to reduce tire friction) and turned the wheels lock to lock about 10 times, then I did the same thing driving down my quiet street. Then I topped the fluid off.
