Where can I find a fuel pump? V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

I have a 1999 V70 AWD XC Wagon with 240.000 miles. Recently I replaced the fuel pump at the recommendation of my private mechanic because the check valve was not working and it required multiple cranks to start the engine because the fuel would flow back into the tank. The Volvo Part Number for this fuel pump is # 9470674. Volvo no longer sells this fuel pump. The fuel pump was originally manufactured by a company call "Walbro" and was not manufactured by Bosch. My garage has reached out to "Walbro" and they no longer sell this pump.

I replaced the fuel pump with an aftermarket unit sold by Pro-Parts Sweden and it was a disaster. It was obnoxiously loud (it sounded like vacuum cleaner in the back of the car). You could actually hear the pump while standing outside the car. Within a month, the pump failed. I had another Pro-Parts Sweden pump installed and it was just as loud as the one that failed. It is currently in my Volvo, but it is probably a matter of time (short) before it too will fail.

Can anyone recommend where I might be able to find a NOS Walbro pump? I have found a used pump, off a 2000 V70 AWD with 207,000 miles. My garage has recommended against it because of the high mileage and if the pump has been sitting for a while, the gas has turned and corrosion begins to form on the electrical contacts, so even if the pump works, it too will be short lived.

I am getting a dark feeling the absence of a reliable fuel pump may spell the end of my Volvo, which pains me because it is in excellent condition and prior to the pump issue I had invested money into it for ordinary maintenance.

If anyone can recommend a source for a NOS Walbro pump or where I could find a low mileage used pump, I would be indebted to you.

Hugh

This could work. The AWD pumps might be different from the FWD. Website not clear on this. Call FCP Euro to check if this fits your car. I’ve bought many Volvo and VW parts from them over the years. A reputable company used by many BBers.

      JWalker,

I took a look at the FCP website. The pumps are only for FWD V70's and not the V70 XC. There is a difference. Because there is a rear transaxle, the gas tank has a "saddle" shape that requires the pump be installed at an angle. It also, unlike FWD model, with XC wagons you have to drop the rear suspension to access the gas tank. It costs a fortune to access this pump, that's why you have to be absolutely sure you have a compatible pump. Again, I have this dark feeling the absence of a reliable pump by spell the death of my '99 XC wagon which I have maintained meticulously over the years. Very frustrating. Still, thank you for your help.

        Hugh,

I suggest calling FCP Euro to see if they can help you. Maybe they can special order a pump?

One more thought. Call Erie VOVO and Voluparts - Atlanta. They both specialize in used Volvo parts and have good reputations. Perhaps they have a low mileage pump?

        Good luck,
        Jim

          Jim,

We think alike. I did call Erie Vo-Vo and Volvuparts and neither salvage yard had a pump. I looked at FCP Euro and I think they only have Pro-Parts Sweden pumps and right now they are on back order.

A quick cross reference shows that ipd stocks this 9470674 fuel pump; it's aftermarket with a Pro Parts part number of 23430674:

    https://www.ipdusa.com/products/23453/Fuel-Pump-w-Level-Sender-Assembly-AWD-P80-S70-V70-XC70-for-Volvo-Aftermarket-23430674-9470674-140277

Might give ipd a call to see how they endorse this product it sells, and any warranty the pump comes with when purchased from ipd.

Probably not many other options until you find a genuine Walbro pump?

      Robert,

I did call iPd, Inc. The aftermarket pump it was selling was by Pro-Parts Sweden and was not due to arrive from Taiwan until June. I may be compelled to use a Pro-Parts Sweden pump, but two have already failed me for the same reasons. It is basically the "Only hardware store in town".

Thank you for your reply though.

      Hugh
