struts 850

My 850 GLT has 143,000 miles. Front tires have abnormal wear on outer tread, and doesn't corner as well as it used to. Mechanic says new struts are needed at a cost of $300 installed (Volvo orig. equip.). Also says lower control arms need replacing at cost of $480. Another mechanic, who hasn't visually inspected, says control arms seldom go bad, but that "bushings" may be worn. Which makes sense? Also, is it advisable to stick with Volvo original equipment struts, or are there other brands that may be better? Any recommendationa, thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

One of my 740s has Midas replacement struts, they are JUNK! Although they work just fine, one of them is noisy after 60,000 miles.

I have two other 740's that each have over 220,000 miles, and their original struts still work fine. Actually I am amazed at the lofe Ive gotten out of Volvo rear shocks as well.

Go with the Volvo parts and shop for a price.

What year is your GLT? I think they switched from a
lower control arm with replacable bushings to one where
you replace the entire arm (which is a newer, better
design). I'm not sure what year this occured but others
will know and can help out more if they know the year
    of your car.

Without seeing this car the only thing I'll comment on is the control arms because what really IS common with older, high mileage 850s is that the ball joints wear out and at some point in '94s I believe, the ball joints went from being a seperate part to one costlier part, no longer seperatable from the control arm. I have also seen a couple control arm bushings (not a seperate part either from Volvo) become worn but that's not common.

If you have doubts, get a second visually inspected opinion from someone with Volvo FWD experience such as a trusted dealership if there's one in your area?
