struts 850

My 850 GLT has 143,000 miles. Front tires have abnormal wear on outer tread, and doesn't corner as well as it used to. Mechanic says new struts are needed at a cost of $300 installed (Volvo orig. equip.). Also says lower control arms need replacing at cost of $480. Another mechanic, who hasn't visually inspected, says control arms seldom go bad, but that "bushings" may be worn. Which makes sense? Also, is it advisable to stick with Volvo original equipment struts, or are there other brands that may be better? Any recommendationa, thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
