manual gearbox C70

I have a 1998 C70 with a manual gearbox and when shifting from 2nd to 3rd I feel a notchiness, almost a crunch. It's worse when the car is cold. If I shift slower (i.e. pause btwn 2nd & 3rd) it's ok. Anyone else experience this? I've been to 2 dealers and they say its normal or they don't feel the problem. I haven't been able to drive another manual 70 series to compare. Do I have a syncro problem? or a clutch problem? or no problem?

My 98 S70 T5M (same powertrain as yours) has the exact
same notchiness (I mean I would describe it the same way).
Much worse when cold. I seem to be able to feel the thing move
through a "valley" and then into gear.

I have a 1/97 build date (it is on the door) on mine and 43K
    miles.

There is a TSB that the dealer might know about. It applies
if you miss shifts (they flush the clutch and replace some
parts). I assume it is because the clutch is not completly
disengaging. My dealer offered to do this for free last
month when I asked to see a copy of the TSB but I decided not
to do it since I don't really miss shifts and I kind of
operate on the don't fix it if it ain't broke idea. I have
a copy at home and can post the TSB number if you are interested
(again, only applies if you miss shifts).

Oh, TSB is Technical Service Bulletin which are additional
repair instructions for common problems (helps the techs get
through these problems faster and helps them identify them).
    They are not recalls.

I also bled my clutch and that helped a bit with the feel.
This was a bit tricky but a garage could do it easily enough
if you don't have a power brake bleeder.

I took Mike H's advice and had an independent mechanic check it out. He said that he didn't feel a problem, so that's 3 for 3. So perhaps this feeling is just normal for this drivetrain. Also I agree with you about the ain't broke don't fix it philosophy, so I think I'll just keep driving it and see what happens. But in the meantime I might take your clutch bleed suggestion, and I also heard changing the gearbox oil may help. Maybe I'm being too much of a perfectionist.

Just in case you want to tackle the clutch bleed yourself:

I bled the clutch myself using a power bleeder from:

        http://www.motiveproducts.com/

I just topped up the cylinder and used the tool to pressurize
the line (for brakes, you put fluid in the power bleeder but
for the clutch you don't have to move that much fluid).

First time I did it I somehow messed up. The clutch pedal went
straight to the floor. Second try I was more careful fitting
the drain line (which is where I think I got air back into the
system). It can also be tricky getting a wrench down into the
        correct spot.

You are also working in front of the fan motor so disconnect the
battery to prevent problems (loss of fingers) should the fan
        turn on.

It's seems like you might have a clutch problem. Is it like a grinding problem? Try an independent mechanic to test it out and see what he says.

    Regards,
    Mike H.
