A/C update/ extend your warranty!!!! S70

As several of you may already know from my recent entries to the extended warranty thread, I'm in the shop today getting a dye test on my A/C system. I assumed any problems (leaks) at this point would be associated with the Evaporator and I would need to have the system charged to get me a few months or so down the road. Wrong!! They discovered a High pressure hose (??) that was leaking profusely just behind the airdam. Parts will cost about $250 and labor $250.

Also, inspection of the evaporator is not completely possible. Evidently, there is a 2" inspection hole at the bottom and unless the leak is profuse they won't be able to see any potential problems with the evaporator. So, the system will be charged after this repair and the evaporator will be a future concern. Any alternative ideas out there?

I still can not fathom how it's possible that a car with only 44K miles on it could have problems like this. Between recent ABS problems and this A/C issue, I have spent exactly what it would cost to extend my warranty, all withing two months of expiration!!! If I replace the evaporator, double that.

If you are a smart Volvo owner extend your warranty or deal with the pain. If you have an extended warranty and haven't used it yet, don't feel bad, at least you're sleeping at night.

You CAN see the Evap well enough........ S70

Being a dealer tech , I can tell you that one can indeed see the AC evap well enough to spot AC dye with a blacklight as we do that often. Fortunately for you, S/V/C 70s are not having the same evap problems that the earlier 850s did. If you have dye installed and it leaks out someday and the dye can't be seen under the hood, a person can see enough of the evap to see any leaking dye before guessing at that conclusion.

Thanks Earl. I'm glad to see there are Volvo techs that visit this board to help us out. I've told the mechanic at the private shop about the visibility of the evaporator, but he just insists otherwise. I guess sometimes people only see what they want to see. They've been really fair to me so far so I can afford to let it pass for now. My hope is, since they discovered a major leak in one of the lines, that there's not a problem with the evaporator.

The mechanic showed me an evaporator from an 850 before they began installing upstream pollen filters. He keep it at his desk to show what happens if that area isn't kept clean and dry. Every leaf, bug and road debris was piled against the evaporator creating a soggy wet area that quickly corroded causing leaks.

I would add that you might want to spend $25 at alldata.com and
get access to the factory TSB and campaign bulletins. There is
a campaign for the AC compressor listed affecting about 20,000
98s. Affected owners should have received a letter back in June 98,
though. The documentation says that owners are not to be refused
free replacement of compressor regardless of milage. Campain
number is 8707 in case you want the dealer to double-check for you.

      Ray,
      Thanks for all the input.

The final repair consisted of a hose, accumulator, A/C O-rings, and freon total cost $276, and labor of $227 with the usual taxes, shop supplies and fees for a Grand total of $584.

One interesting point. They didn't have to charge me for puttting dye in the system $20 because someone already had. Evidently, when dye is put into the system, a tag is placed on the system to warn of its presence in the system. Maybe to keep more from being added. Gee, I wonder who did that, and why? Is there anyone who knows if there is some point during scheduled maintanence checks that this is done? Otherwise, I never asked for anything, and I have no record of ever needing, to be done with the A/C system other than the TSB mentioned above.

Sorry, all the cash I've put into my car in the last month makes me more suspicious than usual.

      Ray,
I checked the records at my local dealer because I recalled that they had replaced the compressor, the date was September of 98 and the case number was #83. Is this the same case with a different number or should I look for another issue?

I thought I should follow up quickly on your suggestion while they have the system disassembled. I'm having the work done at a private shop today, so I wonder how Volvo would want to handle it. I'm debating about the extra $25 to check alldata.com at this point if the compressor was replace once already. They likelyhood of two replacements of the same item seems a remote possibility.

I checked again and, yep, it is called "Campaign 83" and the TSB number
        is 8707.

Thanks! Is this replacement regardless of condition of the condensor or need to repair it? Are these cases determined by VIN number?

It is for the compressor (not the condensor) and cases determined by VIN
number. Since they sent out a letter I assume it was regardless of
the condition (sounds like the original poster had the compressor
        replaced already under this campaign).
