should I buy this car? V70-XC70 2001

folks-
pls give me opinions. I looked at this car yesterday: 01 v70 2.4T with 28K miles. The seller is 2nd owner. I saw the service history and it looks pretty good, however there are two things that bother me.

First, the tires are very worn. The back tires (presumably used to be on front) need to be replaced now. as in, almost no tread. Front will need to be replaced very soon. maybe 5k miles left. The tires are the Michelin 205-55's, ummm I think the model was MVX-4 or something like that. I would expect an H rated tire (I think this tire is H rated, right?) to last 40-60K miles, NOT at 28K miles.

The other thing is that the guy showed me the inspection summary when he bought it. notes showed 40% brake pad up front, 60% in back. That seems like a LOT of wear for a 25K mile car. (car had 25K when he bought it).

this, to me, sounds like a lot of wear for a family car. I am afraid that the first owner may have pounded the car pretty hard. I am not so worried about the pads and tires themselves, but that they symptomatic of a hard life. What do you guys think?

the guy is asking a negotiable $28.9K.

btw, I am having a mechanic look it over on wed.

should I bite or cut bait?

Dan

    NO V70-XC70 2001

It has not had the gentle life that you want in a car. Maybe for 20K, but I know someone who bought a 01 new for less than they are asking for that one.

I would have to agree with Phil. 28.9k is too much for a private sale. In central Pa, you can go to the dealer and buy an 01 certified with 6/100k mile warranty for the same price with less to the same milage. There will be others, vcna sold a bunch of them last year.

Second owner of a '01? Now wants to sell? I'd pass on that bit of info alone. Also, I don't think a brand new '02 should cost you much more than $29k, depending on your negotiating skills and restraint with respect to the options list.

Guy says that he is selling because he is getting a company car.

I think that 29K is pretty optimistic for a an 02 v70 2.4T ASR. I think that invoice is about $34K-36K

      am I wrong?

Key phrase "much more". Invoice '02 2.4T=$32454, I received bids as low as $1000-1500 the UNDER invoice (not sticker) price on a T5 a couple months ago. (Through Car Bargains www.checkbook.org) Less the $500 owner "loyalty rebate" Volvo is/was running (see the Volvo website). $32454-$1500-$500=$30,454. "Not much more", IMO.

I elected to postpone purchasing, for a variety of reasons. I looked it up, and I bought my '98 for $1000 under invoice, so this is not unusual.

Do you know why second owner is selling? Are there service records? Heavy tire and brake usage could be a sign that the first owner was Boston Coach. Boston Coach, which is owned by the Johnson family that owns Fidelity Investments, buys V70 2.4Ts and S80s for use as livery vehicles. They usually run them for 20-25K miles and then put them through auctions. The colors are usually dark blue, silver, or moondust. If you ever go to the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport you will see at least a hundred of them on any given day. This is not necessarily a bad thing but you should know that perhaps the vehicle was used as a taxi. Or, perhaps I am totally off base and the previous owner was just somebody who used the brakes a lot and drove the car hard. The asking price seems to be around what you see these vehicles being offered at dealers in the Northeast.
