engine vibration? S60 2001

Hi all,

My MY01 S60 is equipped with the 2.4 engine (168 hp, US spec) and manual transmission. When accelerating, the engine produces vibration between 1,000 and 1,200 RPM that is strong enough to cause other parts of the car, mainly the exhaust system and sunroof, to resonate. The noises were not present when the car was new, but gradually developed over the first six months/4,000 miles of service.

In attempting to quiet the car, the service tech has replaced a section of the exhaust system (flex pipe), the heat shield and the sunroof rails. The car is quieter than before, but the sunroof, when closed, still buzzes under the specified conditions.

Is this much vibration normal for the five cylinder engine? Have others experienced this problem? It seems the tech has been treating the symptoms but not the source of the problem, engine vibration. Comments?

Thanks, Richard

    Hello All,

There is a SW upgrade for the ETS (Electronic Throttle System). There is a know Bug in the SW that causes the engines to run rough and especially turn off in a very rough manor. Some of the early built S60 could have this problem.

Have your Dealer inspect the ETS modules and have the SW upgraded.

    Good Luck,

    Steven---

    engine vibration? S60 2001

    Hi,

I have a S60 2.4 (170 hp in our classification) and get engine vibration when idling. I went to service and they said, quote: typical of all s60's. I didn't settle at that and wrote to Volvo. Their reply was "problem not typical, not even known to occur". Still investigating...

    My meter is at 13000.

I have the same vehicle (Canadian specs), and I have not experienced any of the problems you've mentioned. My car has 12,000 kms, approximatley 7000 miles. I have notices that the car does not like to be below 2000 rpm in second gear, but it does not make any noises that can be considered out of the ordinary.

    Hope that helps

    rwd,

I have the same car with the same problem. On mine, it will do like a resonance vibration on the heatshield at any gear, at 2,200 to 2,500 rpm's. Is there a way to get rid of this, it will be great because in 11K miles it is the only complaint I have.

Does the same vibration happen in all gears? Perhaps one of the engine mounts is bad. If happening only in first gear, perhaps clutch or halfshafts. I am not a mechanic- just some thoughts as to what I would look at.

      >Does the same vibration happen in all gears?

Only 1st and 2nd, as the offensive rpm range is too low for taller gears.

      >Perhaps one of the engine mounts is bad.

      My thoughts, too.
