Buy Canadian T5? S70 1999

Test drove a T5 the other week at a used car lot near where I live. Have been looking to upgrade from the NA I have been driving last 4.5 years. Car is a lease turn in with 38K miles, automatic, cloth/vinyl interior, new Pilots. Wish it had leather but I can get over that. Car has that turbo power and is in decent shape with the exception of some stains on seats, carpet. Car came from Canada. This is fairly common where I live although Canada is still 4 hours away. Exchange rate is attractive. Still has climate control in Celsius but speedo was changed. Some of the lights in the dash were out and the radio needed a code to work. He's asking 20K, which is not far from edmunds. Any thoughts? I have been told that remaining one year of warranty is transferable from Canada to US. Should I go for it? This could be the one! Thanks.

    Update S70 1999

Unfortunately, somebody beat me to it. I still have the word out to a couple of dealers who go to auctions to keep their eyes open for a T5 with less than 40K miles. Can't beat the price in my opinion for $18-22K. Thanks to all who posted.

    Buy Canadian T5?-- Yeah, but S70 1999

I actually purchased a Canadian 1998 S70 T5 in Aug of 2001 in the US. When I purchased the car I had an additional 6 months remaining on the warranty. The first problem I had was the brakes... The brakes and rotors needed to be replaced. I was taken back, first because of the $700 price tag (dealer paid because of safety issue when they sold car), second, the car only had 39,000 miles. Once I got the car out of the shop, the motor mounts went out. Once agin I took the car to the dealership and they replaced the motor mounts under warranty with no questions asked.

The only other problems with the car is various lights have burnt out but, I attribute it to the lights remaining on at all times (Canidan Requiremnt, need to buy new Amercian headlight switch). As far as the conversion goes, I've had no problems...temp and odometer work perfect. I also had to buy new owners manuals, the ones provided were in French.

As far as performance is concerned, the car is very fast and fun to drive. The technician at the dealership even commented that the car has more juice then the it's American Brother.

My suggestion to you would be to have the car checked out and drive the same model in an American version. If the car is pirced right, mechanically sound, and most importantly you like it, I would suggest buying it. Good luck on your decision.

Go ahead. Buy it. S70 1999

I have a Canadian-origin S70T5 and except for the DRL switch, kilometer-o-meter and centigrade climate control (22C=72F on the panel) I can't imagine what the differences might be. In my case, the speedometer was changed by a bonded company that performs such swaps. I changed the headlight switch for $20, then rewired my foglights for use as DRL's. Kept the centigrade climate control plate, but the Fahrenheit replacement is cheap. The electronics and emissions control system is US standard. And it came with DOT lenses (ugh, switched to e-codes after the first night)...there's an indication right there.

Do not purchase this car unless the seller can produce receipts that show the Canada to US conversion from a Volvo dealer. This would include the instrument cluster AND a software download that is very expensive. (in excess of $1000.00). There are a few unreputable companies that are not converting these cars properly. Will cost big bucks the first time you darken the door of a US dealer if the car you are considering is not done properly.

I am also curious about the software download you speak of. Besides the speedo being changed, what else would they have to do as long as emissions are passed. (My climate control is in Centigrade, but I don't care)

I've been to the dealer, and they don't seem to have any problems with my Canadian S70.

I can see that the instrument cluster was changed but I do not know about the software download. The speedo worked and the odo was changed to miles. What is the software download for? The instrument cluster conversion from kms to miles? Since I typically don't go to dealers I guess my risk would be during the remaining warranty period, which is 12 mos. and around 12K miles. Thanks for your advice.

The problem is a result of the networked computer system in the 99+ volvos. If for any reason somthing computer network related (for example: the throttle body - quite common on early 99's) needs to be replaced the database that volvo uses will know that the instrument cluster does not match the VIN for this car. Upon this happening the vehicle will not accept a download until the mismatch is rectified and you wont get your car fixed until this expensive piece of software is installed. The fact that you dont use dealers for regular service is irrelevant on 99+ car because all but the very largest independant specialists do not have the capability to download. IF you want your car fixed for certian items it is all but impossible to avoid the dealer.

I got a Canadian T5 (police package) several months ago. Yours will probably have the winter package, and maybe a larger battery , possibly a block heater. If you get tired of the cloth seats (which are really quite durable, just not as easy to wipe spills off as leather), get to a junkyard and swap them. No big deal. Fine cars, and no reason not to buy, if the condition matches the price. Climate control, and even gas gauge, in metric is not a problem--once you set the temp on the climate control, how often do you really need to read it?

Do you live in Canada or do you live in the States and brought it over? Thanks.

I live in the States, and bought it from another stateside driver who had bought it in Canada. It's been to the dealer here for the front headlight warranty work, and they never said a word about any Canada-US redo.
