front seats are still loose, anyone ever install that gas strut from the TSB?? 850 1996

Hello,

The front seats in my 96R are irritatingly loose. It's extremely hard to enjoy the amenities of your luxury car when the seat rocks back and forth under acceleration and braking. I know that the cheap fix is to put shims under the seat rails where they bolt to the floor. I tried that and I think my problem is too severe to be fixed by coins. I have heard from this board that the real fix is that expensive little gas strut that takes up slack in the seat. Has anyone here installed this part? Could you describe the difficulty of the install? Did it work?

Basically, anyone with any experience regarding this problem and any solutions, please reply.

As always, thanks in advance,

Duncan

If the seat is actually LOOSE, I'm not sure that the gas strut will do much. It is also pretty expensive, like around $200 plus the tech time for installation I seem to remember. I spoke with the service manager at my dealership and he/she/it claimed that the TSB refers to the Volvo SV40, not to the 850-SVC70. It would not be covered under the extended warranty.

I used washers, whch I painted black to match the seat frame, not the nickels. Also, I put them under the LF bolt and the RR bolt.

There are 3 TSB's. S/V-40, 850/S/V/C-70, S-80. They all have varying degrees of loosness, and all have different part #s. The install is fairly straight foreware on the 850 seats, but you will need a helper and a monster set of chanellock pliers to compress the strut enough to install the bolt. The TSB has pictures indicating location. The small screw that holds the bracket to the motor housing is EASILY stripped, so be carefull.

Also.... 850 1996

It looks to me like the LR (LHD) Driver's seat) and RR Passenger seat bolts are designed to adjust the position of the frame.

Also, this problem is not confined to the FWD Volvos! A helpful thread from the archives is..
