Sounds like ball-bearings in a tin can

Hi,

Started my '02 XC a day ago and was greeted(?) with a noise much like a metallic castinet, like atwo or three metal ball bearings being shaken in a tun can. I popped the hood, but not before noting the sound was very easy to hear 20 feet away!
Sound comes from the passenger side of the engine, and could be the belt, one or more flywheels (for the belt), an alternator or A-C part. I took it into the dealer. They listened and sent me home with a loaner. Car has less than 700 miles and of course is under warrenty. Just curious as to guesses, and I'll let everyone know what the outcome is. One tech told me he thought it is a major problem, but wanted to take a further look-see.

Regards,

Dave

Sounds like ball-bearings in a tin can V70-XC70 2002

Hi,
As a follow up, the noise was a defective serpentine belt replaced under warranty.

Is there a piece of heat shielding that's come loose somewhere? The sound that you describe is exactly what I heard on my 740 when a piece of flashing came loose on my exhaust system in front of the CAT. It was vibrating with the engine. Something loose like that would be the first place I'd look for a not-so-serious culprit. (Just be careful not to burn yourself on hot parts if you decide to poke around in there.) An old Volvo gremlin come back to haunt the new breed?

Good luck. I hope it's something simple.
