Sounds like ball-bearings in a tin can

Hi,

Started my '02 XC a day ago and was greeted(?) with a noise much like a metallic castinet, like atwo or three metal ball bearings being shaken in a tun can. I popped the hood, but not before noting the sound was very easy to hear 20 feet away!
Sound comes from the passenger side of the engine, and could be the belt, one or more flywheels (for the belt), an alternator or A-C part. I took it into the dealer. They listened and sent me home with a loaner. Car has less than 700 miles and of course is under warrenty. Just curious as to guesses, and I'll let everyone know what the outcome is. One tech told me he thought it is a major problem, but wanted to take a further look-see.

Regards,

Dave
