Cruise Control problems 850

I have been having problems with my cruise control intermittantly. The unit will quit functioning while going down the road for no apparent reason. It may or may not re-engage when I either push the speed increase button or the resume button. It seems to be worse the warmer the weather gets. When I too k it in to the dealer this morning (temp was 63) it worked for a bit and then quit. When the temp is above 80 or so, it won't engage at all. I know there is a problem that was solved beofre by replacing a vacuum line under the battery box. The dealer looked at it this morning and said that they never heard of any problems with any of the Volvos and a vacuum line. They said I need a new control module and it will only cost $435 installed. That price includes the module and $111 in labor to replace it.

I was hoping that someone mught have some insight into this and if I do need a new control module, where I can get one that is cheaper than the dealer price. If I do need a module, can I replace it my self and save the $111?

    Cruise Control problems 850

    Control module problem is VERY unlikely. More likely are split hose from vacuum pump to actuator, brake vacuum valve out of adjustment or leaking, leaking servo diaphram at accelerator pedal, or a corroded vacuum pump. The vac pump mounts under the battery tray. The hose problem usually found behind/under the battery tray. Try lifting up on the brake pedal with your foot and see if it works. This would indicate misadjusted brake pedal vacuum valve. To test the integrity of the vacuum system, find the black hose at the vacuum pump on the front side bottom of the battery tray. Apply vacuum to the hose with a cheap vacuum pump from a local discount auto parts store. As you pump vacuum, the throttle spool should begin to rotate. (engine off during test) Stop pumping and the throttle should hold it's position. If it slowly returns to idle position, you have a leak.
