Rear bearings causing noise?? V70-XC70 2001

My 2001 XC70 is 2 years old now and has 25000 miles on it. Great car with few problems. Recently it has become very noisy while driving. Thought it was the tires as I was sounding more like a truck with off road tires the the $40k car it is suppose to be. Was considering new tires but with only a year left on the lease, I figured I'd live with the noise. Then, my wife ran over a nail and a tire needed replacing. The cost at the dealer was $175 per tire(Pirelli Scorpion S/T) and it would need 2 because of the AWD system being overly sensitive to different circumferences. I ended up replacing all 4 tires with the Goodyear Regatta 2s, an all season touring tire rated very well and suppose to be very quiet. Oh well, the noise is still there and getting louder. The tire dealer test drove the car and said the noise is due to rear bearings going bad, not the tires. Appointment Tuesday with the dealer to check the bearinga and replace if needed. Anyone else have similar problems? Seems that this is strange as I only have 25000 miles. Thanks guys.

Rear bearings causing noise?? V70-XC70 2001

Just to update with a typical story of why I would never buy another volvo. Five trips to the dealer, a half a dozen calls to Volvo North America, and $500 in out of pocket expenses for car rentals that neither the dealer or VNA are willing to reimburse, they have yet to repair all the problems with the front, and now, rear bearings. I have done a count, and my 2001 XC has been in the shop for 25 days since purchased, for various things. Never a loaner, hundreds of dollars in rentals. At what point does the Lemon Law kick in?

Amazing. We must have both posted our message within minutes of each other about the same problem. By the way, how many miles do you think you would have gotten out of the tires. I have 24K now, and it doesn't look like much left. Did you rotate regularly? Also, I'd be curious about options for replacement tires. I heard that it's important to go with OEMs, but, I don't know if this is really true and if there are better options. Certainly the Pirelli's have a reputation for being noisy. But I also need a tire that's good in the snow and on ice.

Rear bearings causing noise?? V70-XC70 2001

      des 16,
I took the car in today and they are replacing both left and right rear wheel bearings. They didn't seem surprised at all when I expalined the problem. I'll find out tomorrow when I pick it up if this is a common problem for the XCs. When I replaced the tires, I went to a tire store that handles about every brand you can think of. We are limited in selection because of the size recommended, a 215/65/16. I wanted an all season tire, central New York is home for me, but didn't require the heavy tread that the Pirelli Scorpion STs have. I also was looking for a tire that would give a nice ride and was considered quiet. They recommended the GoodYear Regatta 2s. So far they handle nice and the ride is better then the OEMs. I'll see how quiet they are after the bearings are replaced. Good luck with yours. BTW, I probably had another 10000 miles left on the Pirellis.

How did your repair go? When they went to replace my front bearings, they said the axle was frozen or rusted, and they could pry it loose without breaking it. They said they'll need to order a new axle. Sounds strange for a nearly new car. But, at this point, nothing surprises me.

It feels like I have a new car. They replaced both rear hubs/bearings and the car is quieter then I ever remember it being. I think the bearings have been causing noise for a long time. Of course I have the new tires on it and they are definitely quieter then the OEM Pirellis. The service manager said it is not a "common" problem but they do see a few cars with bearing problems at low mileage. Good luck with yours and safe driving.
