Tailgate struts... 850 1995

Hi, I think my tailgate struts on my 850 Wagon are almost done working, I've been bashed on the head one too many times now. Is replacing the struts dificult? I have heard you have to take the tailgate off to do this job? Special tools? If anyone has attempted this, I'd appreciate their knowhow.
Thanks.

Robert.

Robert.. Piece of cake to replace.

I suggest a replacement set from IPD. They're about $50 cheaper than OEM parts and come with an easy set of instructions to follow.

I just replaced mine with a new aftermarket set i found on ebay for $30+6.50 s/h. They were from fcp groton, and are much more heavy duty than oem shocks.. In terms of replacing them, i just removed plastic trim on the back (where you access rear lights) and then removed plastic trim above rear windows. I had no need to remove tailgate...took me 30 minutes maybe. Also see bay 13 repairs at www.volvospeed.com for a good walk through of replacement.
