defroster question-cabin filter - whats the flap for? S70

My defroster doesn't seem to be blowing much air and it takes forever to clear the windshield, could a clogged cabin/pollen filter be the cause?

I also had the dash pulled apart this summer when they worked on the A/C - I'm also worried that they could of messed up the defroster plumbing when they had everything apart!

FYI - I just changed the filter (the old one had 45K on it). There seems to be a slight increase in air coming out of the defroster. But - when I removed the old filter, I noticed what looked like a flap below it, in-between the filter and the fan motor (behind the glove box). When I touched the flap it dropped down (its hinged) so now there is a clear path between the filter and the fan motor. Is that flap supposed to be up or down, or is it supposed to move depending on the fresh air / cabin air switch?

Thanks

That flap opens for fresh air and closes for recirc. It's controlled by an electric motor behind the glovebox. If it moves freely, the white plastic arm between the motor and flap has either falleŚ off or is broken so you'll need to remove the glove box and look at it. It's not in a great location to work on but removing the screws for that motor if need be can be done w/o removing anything more than the glove box.

Found the problem, the plastic fitting on the end of the control arm, where it attaches to the recirc door, is broken. I was able to remove the whole control rod assembly by slipping it off the control motor shaft.

Question is, after I get the new part, how do I get to the recirc door fitting where the control rod attached to it, do I have to remove the panels below the glove box?

I'm assuming the piece broke when I pushed down on the door when changing the pollen filter. Since that happened, the lamps on the AC & Recirc buttons flash indicating a problem with the system. I also noticed that the motor that is supposed to turn the door mechanism doesn't move when I change from outside air to recirc air. Is there any relationship between the (me) breaking the door fitting and the motor no longer working and the lights flashing?

      Thanks for the help!
