PNP switch 850 1996

hi think my switch is finally going, heres my question. took it out for ride seems to be shifting ok and all, just that flashing arrow up button and on gear box econo/sport switch. I am driving next week from south jersey to canada, should i try to fix it before trip or can it wait till i get home. will it cause any damage? will i get stuck? what could happen? sorry about all the questions. any input would be helpful. kelly

PNP can be aligned using your car's reverse lights as a reverse position sensor.
Recent trhead on volvospeed describes this. Basically, adjust PNP until reverse light illuminates. Keep in mind that PNP failure is not the only cause of a flashing transmission light. I just had to replace my transmission ECU. Costly, and dealer only. 99 S70 AWD 58K miles

The failure mode is fairly "good" in that you can go for some time
with it broken. We drove ours for about 4 months. Towards the end, the
transmission would more frequently lock into third gear (limp home
mode). We could work around this by letting the car warm up then
turning off ignition and restarting to get it out of limp home mode.

Personally, I avoid any major work before a long trip. I'd want to
fix it and drive it locally for a week or two before a trip.

my PNP is also failing, I guess that what they say about cold weather helping it along is true. I have the Bay 13 instructions, but can anyone tell me if I really have to buy the alignment tool from Volvo that they speak of in those excellent instructions? BTW what does the switch (and alignment tool) cost at the dealer? any cheaper OEM available?
thanks

A few people have posted that they did not align it and it worked OK.

I had a shop do it. They claimed they had already done 20 (but they
still failed to get the gasket for the flame trap put back -- I found
it sitting on top of the tranny when I double-checked the work). The
shop can't even reset my 98's service light so I doubt they had an
alignment tool (so there s 20 done with no special tools).
