96 850 Engine explosion?? 850

Hello, just visited a dealer's showroom and looked under the hood of the 850 GLE wagon. The fireproof cloth under the hood had a hole that looked like it came from an explosion (directly above the alternator). What possible causes? (It did not look like a mouse nest - something that happened to my 740). TIA

If it is any consellation, my 1995 has the same hole. Wondered about that myself. Now has 118,000 k on it. Bought it from a volvo dealer with 60K..certified car. Has been great.

Not sure what to tell you other than mine has the same wierd hole.
