96 850 Engine explosion?? 850

Hello, just visited a dealer's showroom and looked under the hood of the 850 GLE wagon. The fireproof cloth under the hood had a hole that looked like it came from an explosion (directly above the alternator). What possible causes? (It did not look like a mouse nest - something that happened to my 740). TIA
