just went through this with 93 850 and searched here and learned what was up and resolved it...
does this happen after the car had been previously moved or driven an extremely short distance ?
if you turn and hold the key to start it while HOLDING the gas pedal to the floor and let the starter crank like a SUPER suepr long time, it will probably start. it was essentially flooded. this is known as lawn mover syndrome, because it is common after moving the car in the garage, just a little , such as to get to the lawn mower. however, it also has been reported under slightly different conditions as well.
from what i found, there is also usually another issue , though minor...like fuel filter that is a little too old or too blocked, valves that are a little too carbonized, etc.
(the problem is also more common in cars that are driven short distances regularly and cars that are not revved HIGH regularly. these engines are meant to be revving!)
the british volvo club online also has this info on its site. i found it here by searching for 850 no start and spending about an hour.
using mobil one synthetic oil is part of the fix, bc if this happens, gas is getting into your oil and regular oil will lubricate insufficiently with gas in it. once you have the new oil, another part of the fix is to drive for not l ess than 20 miles at NOT LESS THAN 4000 rpms...basically drive at high rpm (lower gear at speed) for extended period to clean up valves and combustion chambers.
