Hood Latch Broken 850 1997

I've got a peculiar problem on my 97 850R. The little plastic tab on the hood latch has somehow popped out of place. I've tried inserting a steel wire, with a little bend at the end, through the grill to pull the metal latch back, but the hood will still not open.

Any ideas on how to get the hood open?

The grill is held in with 6 or 8 plastic washers. They are rectangular and have a keyhole shaped opening in them. When the grill is installed, the pins on the grill go into the large end of the keyhole and the washer is then slid to the side to lock it in place.

What you'll have to do is with the hood released, reach your fingers under the hood, behind the grill and find these retainers. Push them over to release the pins on the lower edge of the grill and you should then be able to pull the grill out enough to reach the mechanism and free the hood.

These retainers are about 3/4" long by 1/4" wide as I recall. I think the grill is plastic so be carefull not to break it's mounting pins while fumbling with the retainers.

After writing all this I recall that Bay 13 has the procedure. Go to:

    Good luck,

Thanks Erwin, that worked like a charm. Not sure why the little plastic tab/lever popped out of place.

      Thanks again,

Glad to help. First time I heard of this happening I checked mine out and it is a pretty flimsy arrangement. I lubed mine and hope for the best.

Not that you do, but fyi, raising the hood by pulling up on the plastic release is a sure way to break it off.

        Regards,
