Hi,

The problem just started yesterday. None of the eletrical methods of unlocking doors - keyless entry remote, operating key on the driver door, or the power door lock switch on driver or front passenger door - would work on unlocking the front passenger door, although I can hear the mechansm making noises in the door when one of these methods is used. The only way I can unlock it is to manually pull up the knob. All other door locks work fine.

All the eletrical methods work fine on the front passenger door when locking.

Has anyone run into this problem before? How was it fixed? If fixed by the dealer, how much were labor and part costs?

I am reasonably handy (I do my own oil, filter, coolant and brake fluid changes); is this something I can attempt on my own?

    Look at my post below. You can do it yourself. Access is a bit tricky but it's not that hard. The part is $90 via an online order.

      This just happened on my 2000 XC. I've been searching the net for the part, but have not been able to find it. Can you point me to the url? ANy pointers on removing the interior door panel? Thanks.

      I found a number of articles doing a search on "power door locks" as you suggested; should have done that earlier. It appears a relatively common problem, given the number of posts. Fortunately looks like replacing it won't hit the pocket book too hard.

      Now that my car is out of warranty, I am taking it to an independent Volvo shop - dealer wanted over $400 for a timing belt change, while the independent shop quoted me $250 which is more inline with the price other folks reported here.
