850 GLT Alarmed and NOT startable CATCH22` 850

Hi, my (95) 850GLT estate, refuses to acknowledge any signals from the Key Fob, it is alarmed and of course if I open the door with the key the alarm is triggered and I cannot start the damm thing !. I have fitted new batteries to the key fob, this fob make a slight click when a button is pressed (its the version with 2 buttons 1 above the other for lock/unloak and a seperate 'panic' button.

I have a spare key fob but as i had never tried to use it ,gues its never been 'proggrammed into the alarm system', I have the instruction leaflet for this alarm system but the crunch is I need a WORKING 'system' before any other fobs can be progged in, at present in desperation i have disconnected the car battery and will leave it off for 24 hours in the hope the sytem MIGHT reset ??.

My other car (Rover)had a key which can be use under the bonnet to switch off the alarm/immobiliser but i havent heard of this on the Volvo ?. Any suggeestion please ??, its weird that the car may have to be towed to a dealer for such a problem !.

Cheers...
Reg.

My FOB occasionally refuses to work also and I have found that I must insert key and turn counterclockwise twice ( so all 4 doors are unlocked ) to prevent alarm from sounding. Hope this helps.

The alarm system should be armed/disarmed by cycling the key in the LF door even if the remotes are inop. Try locking, unlocking the LF door with the key.

The remotes might need to be reprogrammed if they don't work after changing batteries. On your car, that's very easy. Just cycle the ignition key on/off 5Xs and on the 5th time, when the ignition's on (within 10 seconds) press lock on one remote, unlock on the other. If you only have 1 remote, press lock, then unlock on the one remote instead. If it programmed, it should work with the ignition key removed from the ignition switch.

Ok, thanks but my was not disarmed by any other means than using the Fob, it has now been sorted ,with a guy who came round and 'reset' the cars radio/alarm system within relay 210/11 under th drivers side (UK version) it took 5 mins and when this was done I was able to have both my keys re-progged cheaply !.

Thanks Harry and Ron, I must admit I have not tried the key 4 times, and as for programming the fob, I have already tried and as i said its catch22 as first you need to have a working and therefore unarmed car to reprog a new fob, my fobs have 2 button one above the other 1 arms/disarms the car the other sets off the alarm for 'panic' use.
